The Tutor Duo, LLC is a husband-and-wife team of educators boasting over 40 years of combined teaching experience. Nathan and Dana Hurwitz each bring their specialized areas of expertise to children from kindergarten through 12th grade and into graduate school. They individualize lessons for each student, building on the children’s strengths to help them overcome their weaknesses.

Nathan and Dana believe that every student has the potential to succeed when provided with the right support and guidance. There is no such thing as a “bad student”, only students haven’t grasped certain key concepts yet. With this philosophy in mind, they have dedicated their lives to education, striving to make a positive impact on every student they work with. So many students struggle with their studies (especially math) because someone has told them that they “aren’t good at math.” To help students become “good at math,” Nathan and Dana break down key concepts, making them manageable for all students. Their approach is holistic, focusing not only on academic achievement but also on personal growth and development. Once a student understands that they can “do math,” they become eager to experience their initial success over and over again.

Dana Hurwitz – Expertise in Langauge Arts, Math, and Humanities

The biggest reward for me is connecting with a student one-on-one.  Teaching in small groups allows me to get to know each student, helping me to inspire a love for learning in each one.

Dana Hurwitz

Dana’s primary focus has been as an elementary and middle school math tutor and an elementary and middle school reading tutor. However, her expertise extends beyond math and reading into language arts and humanities. She has spent over 20 years teaching these subjects, helping students develop strong math, reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Dana’s teaching philosophy centers around the idea that numbers, language, and literature are all powerful tools for understanding the world and expressing oneself.

Dana’s lessons are dynamic and interactive. She encourages students to think deeply and express their ideas clearly and confidently. She uses a variety of teaching methods to cater to different learning styles, including discussions, projects, online platforms, and creative exercises. Her goal is to inspire a love of learning in her students and equip them with the skills they need to succeed academically and in life.

Nathan Hurwitz – A Passion for Math, Science, the Humanities, and Higher Education

Nathan Hurwitz works with students from seventh grade, through college, and into graduate school. He provides math tutoring for pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-Calc, Caclulus, and Statistics as well as tutoring humanities subjects. In addition to tutoring classroom subjects, he is an SAT tutor, ACT tutor, GRE tutor, GMAT tutor, and LSAT tutor in addition to tutoring other college and graduate school entrance exams. He helps his students shine in the classroom, and writes inspiring blog posts to boost students’ excitement, confidence, and self-esteem. He explains complex concepts in clear, easy-to-understand ways and guides students, parents, and teachers to the best educational resources.  He aims to empower students to believe in their educational abilities and their potential.

He has a deep passion for math, English, and literature, subjects he has taught for over three decades. His enthusiasm for these disciplines is contagious, and he has a unique ability to make complex concepts understandable and engaging. Nathan’s background in these fields is extensive, and his practical experience allows him to provide real-world applications that bring the subject matter to life.

Nathan’s approach to teaching is hands-on and interactive. He believes that students learn best when they are actively involved in the learning process. This might involve solving real-world problems or using technology to explore new concepts. “Too often students get stuck in their heads, thinking about math concepts. Sometimes just working them out on a paper or screen makes all things clear.” By making learning fun and relevant, Nathan helps his students develop a genuine interest in these critical subjects.

As a supportive and effective test prep tutor, he helps his students achieve or surpass their goals on college or graduate school entrance exams or AP Exams. Additionally, he provides helpful blog posts on creating effective study plans and optimizing tools and time for exam preparation. He guides students through exam preparation, using the best resources, tools, and practice exams. He aims is to help students develop the skills and confidence to achieve their best in the classroom and on their exams.

Tutoring high school students and college/graduate school entrance exams gives me a great sense of satisfaction – I get to help young adults realize their educational potential. Watching a young person make friends with their “inner scholar” is the greatest thing to see.  

Nathan Hurwitz

His BFA is from NYU, his MA is from Northwestern, and his Ph.D. is from the University of Pittsburgh.  He is a tenured university professor, having been on the faculty of NYU, the University of Pittsburgh, Syracuse University, Point Park University, and Rider University.
